Manufacturing Plant & Warehouse

Orora expanded their glass bottle manufacturing plant in Gawler to include an additional furnace and associated production line. The plant now has the capacity to produce 600 million wine bottles a year.

Leighton Contractors, the appointed Contractor, engaged BCA Engineers as the project Services Designers. Design documentation was completed successfully within the required programme.

Our design advice extended from site services infrastructure to mechanical, electrical, fire and hydraulic services systems within the new production warehouse and central plant areas. Also included in BCA Engineers package of works was the process piping systems to make the new glass furnace functional. This included process water, cooling water, natural gas, compressed air (at various pressures), vacuum, fuel oil, lubrication oils and also filtered domestic water. All of these systems had to be woven into the existing configuration of plant and services bridges throughout the site.

Glass Beneficiation Plant

BCA Engineers was involved in Orora’s Glass Beneficiation Plant built adjacent to their state-of-the-art glass facility in Galwer. The beneficiation process removes impurities and contaminants from used or broken glass. The plant processes 150,000 tonnes of glass each year reducing the amount of glass ending up in landfills.

BCA Engineers were engaged to design the building services for the new building, the subsequent site works and interconnection to the existing site infrastructure. The project included a third entrance to the existing Orora site, weigh bridges, boom gates and traffic lights, cullet receival bays, processing sheds, hoppers and silos, control rooms, offices and amenities.

BCA Engineers we also engaged to undertake fire safety engineering for the following performance solutions:

  • Extended egress
  • Fire rating to the structure
  • Fire hydrant coverage
  • Smoke hazard management systems

(Estimated project savings of $300-400k)
