BCA Engineers was engaged by the Hospital operator to review the adequacy of the fire / evacuation procedures and fire protection systems provided for meeting the occupancy requirements of SA Health.

Not-withstanding the fact that Level 1 of the facility was fully compliant with relevant legislation, the existing fire safety arrangement and evacuation strategy were reviewed against the operational requirements in respect to Business Continuity and Protection of Asset (Critical Infrastructure) objectives. This is of particular importance to Level 1 which houses critical infrastructure and support services for Hospital operations.

Level 1 of the Hospital includes the following Critical Clinical Support Services:

  • Pharmacy
  • Mortuary and Tissue bank
  • Equipment Pool
  • Dietary Formula Preparation Area

And Non-Clinical Support Services identified as critical:

  • Logistics and Technology
  • Facility maintenance
  • Utilities Management
  • Security Management
  • Catering
  • Internal Linen distribution
  • Bulk Stores Distribution
  • Mail

The Critical Engineering Services review of fire safety impact included:

  • Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGVs)
  • Pneumatic Tube Systems (PTS)
  • General Air Handling Unit (AHU)
  • Natural gas supply to the Kitchen

Project Value: $40M

This project is located within the area of Bowden which forms part of Renewal SA redevelopment site. The project comprises of two multi-storey apartment building housing 85 apartments, an undercroft parking facility and above ground common plaza area for use by residents.

The project is rated using the Green Star Multi‐Unit Residential Tool (MURT) to achieve and exceed the requirements of the Urban Renewal development as a whole.

Project Value: $80m

This purpose-built building for the Supreme Court of Alice Springs comprises 6 levels, including basement carparking, ground floor public entrance, loading dock, sally port and cells.

The first and second floors comprise all the courtrooms, gallery, judges and jury accommodation. The top two levels of the building comprise open plan office fitouts.

BCA Engineers provided Fire Engineering and Fire Protection services design, construction and certification for this building, working for the construction manager Sitzler and the Fire Contractor (Defend Fire) as part of the design and construct approval process.

Project Value: $60m

Located in Darwin CBD, this Halikos Development comprises 1 retail level at ground floor, including a bar and restaurant, 4 carpark levels with 12 hotel and residential levels, making it one of the largest hotels in Darwin.  It was built in a very short time frame by Halikos, one of Darwin’s major builders. The H105 has changed the Darwin skyline and greatly responded to the hospitality demand, with an additional 280 rooms on the market.

BCA Engineers were engaged to undertake all fire design aspects, including a combined fire sprinkler and fire hydrant system, fire detection and occupant warning system. We provided fire engineering services for cost effective safe solutions, construction services including fabricated drawings, regular inspections and final certification.

BCA Engineers were involved from the design phase through to the completion of this successful project.
