Australian Naval Infrastructure Headquarters, Osborne SA
Services Provided: Mechanical / Electrical / Fire Protection / Hydraulics
Project Value: $7.6M
Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI) identified a need to develop a new head office facility to collocate staff from various sites, including Port Adelaide, the shipyard and project site offices, into a single office located at the Osborne Naval Shipyard.
The new headquarters was to be an iconic structure that’s design would encompass the needs and wants of all ANI staff and provide an environment that would encourage teamwork and forward thinking. The building incorporates an open plan office with breakout spaces and large meeting rooms that cater to the needs of ANI. The office also needed to be a flagship building that could house visiting VIPs.
The architectural and structural design was complex given the building was located above water and the high end fit out. BCA Engineers were engaged and provided expert advice / engineering design solutions for mechanical, electrical, information technology (IT) & communications, hydraulics and fire services.
The key features of our design will strongly support a modern office/commercial environment with a clear focus on enhancing staff resources and experience through state-of-the-art ICT technology and integration of both internal and external spaces.
In addition, we highlight the need to create a sustainable building that offers minimal environmental impact and maximum human comfort. The mechanical design focused on delivering a high standard of indoor air quality without compromise on internal conditions or operational efficiencies.
The use of 3D modelling technology (REVIT) and clash detection software was key to minimising site coordination issues.
Defence Assets Defects Validation Works – Various Sites
Services Provided: Mechanical / Electrical / Fire Protection / Hydraulics
Project Value: Various
BCA Engineers were engaged to validate and detail rectifications for a series of previously identified defects at the following defence assets:
- Larrakeyah Barracks
- Norforce Barracks
- RAAF Darwin
- Robertson Barracks
- Norforce Depot
Each buildings fire and life safety systems were holistically reviewed with the majority of the building requiring modification/installation of fire safety systems to meet Defence requirements, Manual of Fire Protection Engineering (MFPE) and the National Construction Code (NCC). BCA Engineers provided designs and design certification to meet the deem to satisfy (DTS) requirements of the NCC and MFPE, this included specialty systems to protect important defence assets. Any additional issues found were identified back to the client.
Where the DTS solution was not practical, a performance solution option was developed with a private certifier and proposed to the Director Estate Engineering Policy (DEEP). A total of 9 buildings were proposed to have performance solutions with the majority of these due to the building age and heritage listings many including additional issues not identified in the original defects list.
